Having seen the previous four films of the Scary Movie franchise many times, I was expecting great things from the long-awaited fifth film – I was not disappointed. Reading reviews of the film prior to writing this review, I got the impression this film is the Marmite type, meaning you either love it or hate it. I, however had a different experience to what it appears are the majority, I didn’t love and I didn’t hate…I liked it.
The Scary Movie films always set out to parody the latest ‘scary’ films, whilst it did this, you could tell they were making up for lost time by spoofing the likes of Black Swan, Inception and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which were all films from 2010. However, they did parody some of the ‘scariest’ movies from 2012/13 such with the main focus on Paranormal Activity and Mama, with the likes of Evil Dead and Sinister also briefly mentioned. From a person who has seen all the originals, I thought they did a great job spoofing each film. (I mean hey, there was even a nod at the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie!).
Moving on to the film itself, there were many funny/random/good parts. To name a few: a scene involving a pool cleaner’s rave – yeah…it’s probably better to watch the film and see the scene itself rather than me trying to awkwardly explain it. There are many laugh-out-loud moments that are so random, similar to the Family Guy-style humour, one specific scene involving a small red convertible. The fight-scene between the Nanny and Dan is the stand out, most memorable scene from the film, shown in a hilarious montage (with that silly type music). Despite the Scary Movie franchise being very silly and not seeming like it requires much acting, Ashley Tisdale put in a very good performance as Jody, she was quite convincing taking on the role Jessica Chastain plays in Mama. Tisdale was by far the best thing from the film, with the little girl playing Lilly from Mama also putting on an impressive performance.
Obviously, I’ve only given the film three stars, therefore there has to be something wrong with it, well not necessarily. There was nothing that stood out, that made the film bad, it’s just by comparing the film the previous four that meant there could be improvements. One factor that made a notably big difference was the non-involvement of Anna Faris and Regina Hall as Cindy and Brenda retrospectively – speaking on behalf of fans, they were really missed. Occasionally it felt the film was ‘too silly’ if that can be said for a film that spoofs other films, just little bits that got a bit too repetitive at times. In addition, the film felt quite short, well it was at only 86 minutes, however that could possibly be a good thing seeing as it didn’t drag?
Disregard what all the critics have said Scary Movie 5 is not as bad as they’re making out. Thank goodness the Lindsay Lohan & Charlie Sheen scene was only short is all that can be said. It’s not the best of the film franchise and it’s not the worst, regardless, its back and it’s worth a watch!!
Extra: About 30 seconds in to the credits, we get some bloopers, the vast majority being Ashley Tisdale trying and failing to not laugh at some of inappropriate scenes – pretty hilarious, stick around!
